Mike Holmes Winter Checklist For Your Home

With winter knocking on our doors, it’s time to buckle down and make sure your home is ready for the chilly season. At Mike Holmes Inspections, we’re all about proactive maintenance, so here’s your Winter Maintenance Checklist – consider it your battle plan against the cold and snow.

Gutters Galore:

Clean those gutters! We don’t want any ice dams causing trouble. Check downspouts too – they should be channeling water away from your home.

Top of the World – Your Roof:

Give your roof some love. Check the attic for signs of moisture such as water stains, mold or frost buildup. Monitor for Ice damming and icicles. Missing shingles or any damage should be fixed pronto. We don’t want leaks raining on your winter parade.

Draft No More:

Seal up any gaps or cracks in your home’s exterior. Drafts are not invited to your winter party.

Warm Embrace for Your Heating System:

Get that furnace serviced by the pros. Filters need changing, components need checking – let’s keep your home toasty.

Windows and Doors:

Stop drafts in their tracks. Check for leaks and upgrade your weatherstripping game. Plastic film and extra insulation never hurt either.

Pipe Dreams:

Insulate exposed pipes – we don’t want them freezing on us. Shut off outdoor faucets and drain hoses while you’re at it.

Fireplace Fiesta:

Clean that fireplace and have the chimney inspected. Winter nights are made for crackling fires, not unexpected hazards.

Winter Hibernation for Outdoor Gear:

Put away your outdoor furniture and grills. Drain the irrigation system – let’s avoid unnecessary winter wear and tear.

Guardians of the Alarm:

Test those smoke and carbon monoxide detectors. Batteries need changing? Don’t be lazy – do it now.

Insulation Inspection:

Check your insulation levels. If they’re lacking, beef them up. A well-insulated home is a cozy home.

Fan Fair:

Clean and reverse your ceiling fans. Warm air needs to circulate efficiently, and those fans can help.

Snow Showdown Prep:

Get ready for snow removal. Shovels, snow blowers, and ice melt – stock up and be prepared.

Emergency Kit Check:

Ensure your emergency supplies are up to snuff. Flashlights, batteries, blankets – you know the drill.

Trimming Time:

Trim those branches and bushes. We don’t need any surprises when heavy snow starts falling.

Plan for Vacay or Stay:

If you’re jetting off somewhere warm, take steps to protect your home. Set the thermostat right, ask a neighbor for a hand, and shut off the water if needed.

Remember, a well-prepared home is a happy home. Don’t wait for winter to hit – take charge now! Stay warm and cozy.
